What is causing the appearance on this CT image?


This is a ring artifact on CT - seen when one of the detectors malfunctions. It just requires the scanner to be rebooted. Because most institutions now acquire volumes for head CT, it has this spiral like appearance on a coronal reconstruction:



Of course, in the days of film, the axial image may have been mistaken for a ring left by someone carelessly leaving their cup of barium on the film!
